Make CD-ROM Recovery (mkCDrec) — Retired

Note: mkCDrec has been retired since 2012. All disaster recovery development effort moved to its successor, Relax-and-Recover (ReaR). If you are still running mkCDrec in production, we strongly recommend migrating to ReaR — paid migration assistance is available.

The Open Source project “Make CD-ROM Recovery” (mkCDrec) was first released in November 2000. It was widely adopted, with thousands of users creating disaster recovery images of their Linux systems using it throughout the 2000s.

IT3 Consultants maintained mkCDrec and provided community support via Sourceforge, but shifted focus to Relax-and-Recover (ReaR) from 2006 onward. ReaR was designed to address the limitations of mkCDrec — modular architecture, active distribution integration, broader backup solution support, and a more maintainable codebase. mkCDrec was officially retired in 2012.

Migrating from mkCDrec to ReaR

Paid migration assistance is available from IT3 Consultants. We can assess your current mkCDrec configuration and help you replicate or improve it in ReaR, including integration with your existing backup solution.
